2015 Volnay Champans

The 2015 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru offers a fruit-forward bouquet with ample red currant and crushed strawberry scents, not as complex as those of its peers but clean and well-defined. The palate is taut and crisp with a fine line of acidity. Some new oak needs to be assimilated but it seems simpatico with the fruit. There is impressive weight if not finesse toward the finish. A Volnay of substance and girth instead of sophistication - but time may remedy that. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.
