Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Volnay 1er Cru Clos de Chênes from Château de Meursault was showing quite a bit of new oak on the nose that obstructs the terroir expression at the moment. The palate is (again) quite oaky, but there is decent fruit underneath—a Volnay demonstrating presence and depth if not the complexity and nuance of its peers. Patience necessary. There is a commendable if not exceptional Volnay waiting in the wings. Tasted September 2017.

Mid ruby. Spicy nose. Big and bold and stuffed with ripe sweet fruit and the promise of great things to come. Dry finish. Needs lots of time. (JR)
