Tasting notes
Bright purple. Deep-pitched, oak-spiced cassis, cherry, incense and pipe tobacco scents show superb clarity and are lifted by a suave floral note. Rich but energetic as well, displaying outstanding focus and spicy thrust to dark berry liqueur, spicecake, mocha and floral pastille flavors. Smoothly balances richness and vivacity and shows no rough edges on a gently tannic finish that strongly repeats the spice and dark berry notes.

97 yo vines, hand-picked, destemmed, open-fermented with cultured yeast, 12 days on skins, matured in French oak (20-30% new) for 20 months. What a treasure trove the McLaren Vale has with vines/grapes/wines coming from ancient vines that signal all is well. The strength of the message is so powerful and clear you wonder why the Scarce Earth programme occupies such effort and time, unfairly taking attention away from the glory of wines such as this.
