Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, Domaine Georges Noëllat's 2014 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Aux Cras is not dissimilar to Comte Liger-Belair's 2014 Aux Cars in style, although the fruit profile leans a little more toward red than black. It borrows the same delineation and focus, the oak seamlessly integrated. The palate is beautifully balanced, quite rich and extroverted but not over the top. There are layers of black cherry, blueberry and wild strawberry fruit, but it is the satin-like texture that seduces from a hundred paces. As the wine opened in the glass, it began to lose a bit of complexity and I began wondering if it might begin tasting a little monotonous in greater quantity. Hence, I just lopped off a point. Heady perfumed nose. Lots of sweet substance. Great purity and drive. Finesse as well as concentration. (JR)
(only Cheurlin's second vintage for this wine as he recently regained control of the vines): Very dark red. A note of musky reduction to the scents of explosive fresh red fruits, stony minerality and graphite. Thick and dense but with a stony lightness of touch. Tactile, utterly silky wine with terrific inner-mouth mineral energy giving it a light touch. Finishes long, smoky and refined, with a serious tannic spine. From friable calcaire in a warm site, according to Cheurlin. A very suave example of Nuits-Saint-Georges.
About the producer
Domaine Georges Noëllat, based in the village of Vosne-Romanée is today run by Maxime Cheurlin. Cheurlin took over the domaine in 2010 – aged just 20 – and has since transformed its reputation as one of the finest Burgundy wine producers.
