2015 Le Thil (Comte Clary)

The 2015 Le Thil is a dark, powerful wine endowed with serious fruit intensity and power. Black fruit, chocolate, new leather, spice and tobacco give the 2015 much of its dark, brooding personality. From barrel, the 2015 was much more sexy. Today, it is decidedly more tannic and rustic, especially in its tannins. It will be interesting to see if bottle age helps smooth things out. There is more than enough density to support at least a handful of years in the cellar.

Owned by the Cathiards of Smith Haut Lafitte since 2012 . Vineyards just north of Smith Haut Lafitte vines. Clay limestone with no gravel. All Merlot. Very rich and sweet. A little dry on the end. Very sweet. (JR)

A large-scaled, ample wine, the 2015 Le Thil, 100% Merlot from argillo-calcaire-rich soils in Pessac, offers notable depth and texture. Stone fruit, tobacco, mint and cinnamon are pushed forward in this succulent, juicy red. Silky tannins and a broad, creamy finish add to the wine's considerable near and medium-term appeal. This is a strong showing from proprietors Daniel and Florence Cathiard, who are best known for the wines they make at their flagship property, Smith Haut Lafitte.
