Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. Rion’s Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes has an understated but very pure bouquet with fragrant crushed strawberry, raspberry and maraschino scents that are deftly folded into the oak. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannins, nicely judged acidity and satisfactory tension all the way through to the finish. This is the kind of wine that would be polished off at the dinner table – a stylish contribution to the vintage.

Intense nose. This wine and its rich perfume really does enfold you. A warm embrace. The fruit alas is not quite strong enough for the oak but otherwise I was looking forward to something really exciting. Sudden dry finish. But admirable. (JR)
