This is from five different plots. Brighter – lovely colour – than the Acclivi. A very floral and fruity nose. An almost fresh candy character. And very delicate and pure in the mouth, with a touch of savouriness in the finish, which rises like music. This is very idiosyncratic, partly down to the vineyard and partly down to the whole-cluster fermentation. Excellent.

The 2011 Barolo Monvigliero is one of those rare wines that shows the graceful and elegant side of what was in fact a scorching, hot vintage. You'll notice the word Vigneto has been removed from the wine name, thus keeping in step with the new appellation rules. This is a bright and fragrant expression of Nebbiolo that presents a very floral bouquet with blue flower and rose hip. Soft fruit tones of wild cherry and apricot follow suit with honey and lightly toasted hazelnut. I love the silky and prolonged nature of the mouthfeel.

Verduno. Really exciting high-toned aromas. Rich and dense with some tension. Very lively and dancing. Real punch. Lots of fine tannins on the end. (JR)

In keeping with the style of the year, the 2011 Barolo Monvigliero is a bit fleshier and more overt than it usually is. The aromatic signatures are very much present though, accentuated by the inclusion of 100% whole clusters. At the same time, the 2011 offers gorgeous depth and resonance, not to mention superb overall balance. Savory herbs, olives and herbs inform the pungent finish. Burlotto's Monvigliero remains one of the most distinctive and compelling wines being made in Barolo today. This is impressive juice.
