Crimson. Strange nose of hemp. And a bit tough on the end. Not a tip-top Lavaut. A little scrawny. (JR)

Good bright, dark red with ruby tones. Very dark but restrained aromas of blackberry, boysenberry and blueberry complicated by nuances of mint, licorice and game. Then quite inky, primary and tight in the mouth, even a bit tough today. This youthfully bound-up wine finishes with firm acidity and an inky, herbal quality. Showed more sweetness as it opened in the glass but this very bright wine will need patience.

The 2014 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques has a fragrant bouquet that works much better than the "Les Jouises." It has floral redcurrant, raspberry preserve and cassis notes that deserve a round of applause for their delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly hard tannin, showing some reduction at the moment, although there is commendable weight on the finish. It certainly needs a couple of years to coalesce, but there is potential here.
