Arnaldo Caprai is one of the most accomplished vintners in Umbria and Italy for that matter. The 2010 Montefalco Sagrantino 25 Anni is the latest edition of this producer's top shelf expression. The 25 Anni line is always spectacular, although I confess to hoping for more from this excellent vintage. Perhaps my heart was taken by the 2006 Montefalco Sagrantino Spinning Beauty that stole the show this year. The 25 Anni is a dark, masculine and brooding wine with meaty aromas of black fruit, spice, tar and Teriyaki smoke. The aromas show some signs of oxidation. The tannins are very evident and the wine ends with a sharp blast of astringency. The wine already tastes evolved at this relatively young stage in its life, so I'm not confident it can stand the long period of cellar aging required to soften those jackhammer tannins.
