A heavy 1,481 g. Dark crimson. Rich and ripe but layered, savoury (saline?) and interesting. Serious, very ambitious and well intentioned wine that's not playing the sweetness card. Long and quite sophisticated. Salty tamarind aspect. But great density and interest. (JR)

The 2014 La Fleur Morange was a difficult Saint Emilion to pin down when I tasted it from barrel back in April 2015. Now in bottle, it has a slightly reduced bouquet of black plum, cranberry and undergrowth scents, although it does not really convey a sense of joie-de-vivre. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannin, good weight in the mouth, although the finish feels a little forced, as if trying to impress as much as their great 2012 did. Ease off the accelerator pedal and dial down that new oak!

70% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc (80 year old), 100% new burgundy barrels. ‘We’ve adapted vinification for the terroir. Our wines have lots of freshness but people don’t like freshness and so we have tamed it by burgundian élevage.’ Bâtonnage, no racking, left on the lees. Very sumptuous nose. Great raciness, energy. Exciting sumptuous taffeta wine, not the rich sweet dried-fruit impression of so many St-Émilions. (JR)
