Score 90/100 · Drink 2007-2022, Robert Parker, Oct 2007

The outstanding 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape has a dark ruby/plum color and an enticing nose of incense, fig, damp earth, and black cherry and currant. There is an underlying smoky underbrush note to the wine, with superb ripeness, medium to full body, and moderate tannins. This wine should drink nicely for 12-15+ years. This estate, in the very northern part of the appellation with some of the vineyards in Bedarrides, is run by Daniel Stehelin. The blend tends to be about 70% Grenache (from 80-year-old vines) and the rest Syrah with a small proportion of Cinsault, Mourvedre, and Counoise. Ruby-red. Strong graphite and iron notes complement blackberry and cassis on the intensely mineral nose. Rich, weighty and spicy, with deep dark fruit flavors, supple tannins and a sweet, long finish.
