(the 34-year-old vines used for this cuvée are just 25 meters away from those that go into Dugat's Charmes; 90% vendange entier ): Dark red with ruby highlights. Compelling spicy perfume to the aromas of blackberry, boysenberry, violet and fresh blood. Lush and thick on the attack, then bright but utterly seamless in the middle palate, with lovely purity to its dark fruit flavors. Really explodes on the back end, saturating the entire palate with flavor and totally burying the ripe tannins. There's nothing rustic about this outstanding, powerful Mazoyères.

The 2013 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru, which includes about 80% whole-bunch fruit, has a very expressive and well-defined bouquet, with mineral-rich black and red fruit that are very focused. The palate has more delineation than the Charmes-Chambertin, fine structure with a linear and focused finish. This is one of my favorites from the domaine this year - more ebullient and tense than many of its peers.

30- to 40-year-old vines. 80% whole bunch. 100% new oak. On the Morey side. Very muscular nose with lots of leathery intensity. Great intensity and richness with real majesty and drive. Real savour here. Great energy and potential. Lots of stoniness. (JR)
