The 2014 Les Grandes Murailles has an earthy, spicy bouquet with touches of leather and sage infusing the dark red berry fruit. The palate is chewy on the entry with grippy tannin, but I appreciate the purity of the fruit, it feels rounded and quite sensual towards the finish. It just needs another year or two in bottle. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

Tasted blind. Rather oaky nose – albeit good oak – and then a very drying finish. Rather pastiche style. Not de nos jours ! Over-extracted. (JR)

The 2014 Les Grandes Murailles has an opulent and ostentatious bouquet with ample kirsch, strawberry, singed leather and red plums. It could have been pushed too far, yet it retains fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, well-integrated oak, smooth in texture and gaining in intensity towards a gorgeous, lightly spiced finish. This is a very classy Les Grandes Murailles that surpasses my expectations and it should cruise nicely for 12-15 years.

The 2014 Les Grandes Murailles is a pretty, understated Saint-Émilion built on precision and class. Lavender, spice and mint wrap around a core of expressive blue and purplish-hued stone fruits. The 2014 is attractive, but it was frankly quite a bit more exciting in barrel.
