The 2013 Vosne-Romanée Village from the Mugneret sisters is still a few years away from maturity, as the first bottle from the case I purchased on release revealed. Exhibiting attractive aromas of plums, red berries and spices, it's medium-bodied, with a bright spine of acidity and chalky tannins that still contribute some back-end grip. I suspect that another five or six years' patience will be rewarded by a wine of real beauty, as those tannins melt away, but right now it's the vintage's taut, tangy side that's still on display.

Good medium red. Savory red berries, spices and graphite on the nose; more complex than the 2014. Sweet but harmonious acidity is keeping this wine tight and taut in the early going. Finishes with serious but ripe tannins that will require a bit of patience.

Mid cherry red. Gentle red fruit, lightly spiced by the oak. Both fresh and chewy. Tannins are firm and definite but it already shows harmony and promises more scent and refinement. (JH)

(25% new oak; the fruit was picked at 11.9% potential alcohol): Bright, dark red. Brilliantly pure aromas of red berries, red licorice, nutmeg, flowers and stone. Supple and juicy, with terrific vinosity and lift to the perfumed berry and floral flavors. Finishes with a firm tannic spine and lovely aromatic persistence. A superb vintage for this wine--everything a village wine should be. Made entirely from old vines in 2013, as the family's lower-altitude parcel next to the Route Nationale did not produce usable fruit due to the after-effects of the damaging frost on December 9 of 2012. (By the way, don't hesitate to snap up the estate's Bourgogne Rouge if you run into it in a retail shop or restaurant. Made in limited quantity from 60-year-old vines, this delightfully sappy, high-pitched wine delivers pungent red berry, orange peel and floral flavors and a level of intensity that belies its 11.9% alcohol.)
