Score 92/100 · Drink 2018-2030, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Oct 2016

The 2013 Bellevue Mondotte is occasionally too brash on the nose... But not this vintage. It delivers on the promise that it showed in barrel and delivers licorice-tinged red and black fruit, iodine-like aromas that are both fresh and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with a candied, licorice-tinged opening, plenty of sappy red fruit, supple tannin and a clingy, blackberry and raspberry preserve finish that perhaps does not quite have the finesse of the 2013 Pavie-Decesse at the moment. Having said that, give this a couple more years in bottle and you should have an attractive Saint Emilion.

Rather sweet oak, very tough tannins. Impenetrable, but without much fruit generosity to back up. (RH)

This is a magnificent property and terroir, but so little of this cuvee is made that few consumers ever get a chance to sample it. A blend of 90% Merlot and the rest equal parts Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2013 Bellevue Mondotte (13.3% natural alcohol) is a star of the vintage. It boasts a deep purple color as well as sweet black cherry and black currant aromas intermixed with licorice, graphite, powdered rock and baking spices, super richness, medium to full body, pure flavors and admirable texture as well as equilibrium. Interestingly, the pH is low (3.37) for a Gerard Perse (the proprietor) wine, which no doubt accounts for the higher acids in 2013. Drink it over the next 12-15+ years. Wine Advocate.August, 2014
