Score 90/100 · Drink 2024-2038, Neal Martin, Mar 2024

The 2014 Rouget has a more youthful bouquet and blacker fruit with violet and iris flowers than its peers. This is seductive, and the oak is really well integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with powdery tannins and fine acidity, taut and linear but with genuine complexity on the finish. This is better than the bottle in 2018. Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting.

Tasted blind. Youthful colour. Sweet damson fruit and a bit jammy/volatile. Tough and oaky on the palate. Thick tannins. Rather brutal and chunky. (JH)

The 2014 Rouget has a rich and ravishing bouquet with high-toned black cherry fruit, dates and marmalade, a touch of VA just lending it some lift. The palate is medium-bodied with dense tannin, quite oaky in style with a heavy-handed finish that needs more grace and terroir expression. Perhaps it just needs more time? Certainly the showing just after bottling showed more promise. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

Tasted blind. Dark, nuanced crimson. Subtle and haunting nose – real intrigue! Round and velvety. Very rich. Some may find this too much but I welcome the drama and richness. Pure hedonism. Quite sweet and hot. (JR)
