The 2014 Le Gay has a typical Pomerol bouquet. An iron filing tinctures the broad red fruit, still exhibiting that warm brick/terracotta aroma that lends it more complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, especially for this Pomerol estate, which can sometimes come across as a bit brutish. A noticeable spicy element emerges towards the finish, with a liberal sprinkling of black pepper on the finish. As I wrote previously - this is a great Le Gay.

Vinification intégrale (ie in barrel). Tasted blind. Dark core with bricky rim. Fragrant and open and not as evolved as some. A touch cedary/leafy. On the palate, light, dry, elegant. On the lighter side but shows real finesse and freshness. The tannins are finely dry but not drying. (JH)

The angularity on the tannins found with Montviel is again present in Le Gay, although it has a compensatingly higher juiciness scale, with a mouthwatering finish to dominant cassis fruits. The challenges of 2014 in this corner of Bordeaux are evident though, with a slight dip through the mid palate, before heading to an earthy, black tea finish. Pere Verge owner.

The 2014 Le Gay has a perfumed and ebullient bouquet with blackberry, leather and warm brick aromas. I appreciate the delineation here and the manner in which it blossoms in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, well balanced and gentle in style, caressing with pure strawberry and cranberry scents towards the elegant finish. This is a great Le Gay. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

There’s been lots of change at Ch. le Gay since the Parent family arrived in 2002 – with vineyards replanted, the cellars renovated and the winemaking adjusted. No surprise, perhaps, that quality is now higher than ever.
