The 2009 Brunello di Montalcino is a pretty wine, with good freshness and solid overall balance for the year. Sweet tobacco, dried herbs, smoke and spice meld together nicely in the glass. Although a bit compact and forward, the 2009 offers lovely drinking today and should develop nicely for the next decade or so. In 2009, Mastrojanni did not produce their flagship Brunello Schiena d'Asino; that fruit went into this wine.

Sweet tobacco, crushed flowers, dried cherries, spices and worn-in leather meld together in the 2009 Brunello di Montalcino. The wine's mid-weight structure and forward, slightly wilted flavors suggest the 2009 is best enjoyed sooner rather than later. There is good depth in the glass, but the 2009 is already mature.

The 2009 Brunello di Montalcino opens to simple lines of overripe fruit, desiccated raspberry, game and autumnal leaf. The bouquet is presented in a rather heavy-handed manner without the delicate nuances this beautiful estate at Podere Loreto e San Pio is so famously capable of in more balanced vintages. Thankfully, Mastrojanni’s vineyard-designate Brunello picks up much of the slack. This wine is ready to drink out of the gate. Drink: 2015-2020. One of Montalcino’s most historic brands located near Castelnuovo dell’Abate, Mastrojanni is today owned by the founders of Illy espresso coffee. The past decade has seen an impressive series of investments and improvements to quality. Just mid ruby with pale orange rim. Already opening up on the nose with powerful cherry. Generous fruit with good acidity and richly tannic. Impressive length and power, if a little biting on the finish. (WS)
