Very pale ruby. Fragrant, ripe strawberry on the nose and concentrated fruit on the palate underpinned by juicy acidity. Well made for this hot vintage and really showing breed. (WS)

Poggio di Sotto 2011 Rosso di Montalcino is a gorgeous wine to drink now and over the next handful of years. Open-knit and voluptuous in the glass, the 2011 is a highly representative example of the year. I expect the 2011 to mature at a relatively rapid pace, but it is super-expressive and a real pleasure to taste today.

Sweet red cherries, hard candy dried flowers, rose petals and cinnamon grace the palate in the 2011 Rosso di Montalcino. In this vintage, the flavors are distinctly red-tones and just a touch forward, both of which suggest the 2011 will drink well pretty much upon release. I tasted the 2011 from cask about a month before it was scheduled to be bottled. Winemaker Federico Staderini describes 2011 as a year in which temperatures were hot during both day and night, which increased the onset of dehydration. Yields are down 30-35% mostly because of selection.

Just mid ruby. Finely tuned spice and fruit nose. Wonderful, succulent sweet fruit with nearly perfect balance and fine tannic grip. Delicious. (WS)
