Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots has a fragrant bouquet with small red cherries, redcurrant and wild strawberry, elegant and perfumed, understated even but unfurling in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, crisp acidity and grippy tannins like the Suchots from François Lamarche, but here there is more class and harmony, more complexity towards the minerally finish. Excellent. Tasted September 2016.

Bright, dark red. Aromas of black fruits, bitter cherry, licorice, dried flowers, fresh herbs and spices are nicely perfumed but less explosive in the early going than the 2014. Very pure and reticent in the mouth, conveying strong energy and piquant pepper and herb notes to the flavors of black raspberry and licorice. Like the Clos des Fôrets Saint-Georges, this is tightly wound today but the fruit is dense and bulletproof. The wine's strong, dusty tannins will require extended cellaring, but there's almost certainly more to come here.

The slight reduction is favouring the vegetal, stemmy notes over the Suchots berry succulence. I’d like to see a bit more of the latter emerge... (AH)

(mostly from vines planted in 1945 and 1950, just under Richebourg): Bright, full red. Slightly reduced aromas of violet, iris, licorice and smoke; a bit stunted today. Less fruity and complex than the Clos des Fôrets Saint-Georges, with hints of pepper and herbs combining with the tight tannins to give the wine a distinctly serious mien. But finishes with excellent length. A bit inscrutable today, and dominated by its spine.
