Score 92/100 · Drink 2018-2030, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Feb 2015

Villa I Cipressi's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is a pretty, straightforward wine with plenty of Sangiovese typicity. Underbrush, tobacco, worn-in leather, licorice, game and crushed flowers add nuance as the 2010 opens up in the glass. The 2010 isn't an obvious wine, but it slowly works its charms, showing understated refinement and terrific overall balance in a pleasantly rustic style. The firm tannins need bottle age to soften, so readers need to be patient here.

Dario Ciacci's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino offers a beautiful and unique interpretation of the vintage with savory tones of spice and bresaola backed by fresher notes of red cherry, blackberry and crème de cassis. You also get a high degree of grilled herb and pressed flower that hammer home the wine's varietal trueness. It shows silky tannins and an extremely polished approach. A sweet note of cherry and vanilla appears on the close. This is a Brunello of medium density but long persistence. It should hold for ten years or more.

Mid ruby with orange tinges. Closed and reluctant on the nose and with a firm tannic palate with plenty of fruit to back it up. (WS)
