Savoury oyster sauce on the nose with crunchy black fruit and a lovely scent of pipe tobacco smoke, or maybe a sort of Guinness character! Charming and bright and quirky. (RH)

The 2013 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Clos des Réas, which like all Michel’s premier crus sees 50% new oak, has a slightly higher-toned bouquet compared with the Aux Brûlées: small dark cherries, cassis and iodine. The palate is medium-bodied with a pleasing, grainy texture. Here, the dense black fruit mask the structure underneath that gives this a Malconsorts personality. It does not have enormous length at the moment but it is nicely focused.

About the producer
The first vintage of Domaine Michel Gros – one of the many Gros family estates in Burgundy – was 1979. The property has several prized vineyards including its monopole Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru, Clos des Réas.
