Drink 2021-2035, Vinfolio, May 2021

The 2010 today is still very youthful – but the balance is fantastic – the tannins are plentiful but silken, the wine full of energy, with mouth-watering acidity and a dense, coiled-spring-like tension to the palate. At 11 years of age, the tertiary flavours are only just beginning to show. It has years ahead of it and will be wonderful to taste with another five years in bottle. The 2010 really captures the Cirsion philosophy of fruit purity above all else. The 2010 has proved to be a great vintage for Roda all round. (100% Tempranillo, 14.5% alcohol)

The 2010 Cirsión from Rioja shows clear evolution after roughly 15 years in bottle. Its aromas have shifted from ripe fruit toward balsamic notes and savory richness. Polished tannins frame a palate that remains slightly compact, with a touch of oak still present. Today, it reads as an evolved expression of Rioja in a New World-leaning style.

100% old-vine Tempranillo. 1987 was the first vintage of this wine. 2010 was a cool vintage. Hand-harvested. Eight months in new French oak and 4 months in bottle. Deep brick red. Leather, sweet undergrowth and liquorice, and yet a sweetness of red fruits, too. A top-notch oaked, mature wine. Sweetly evolved, senescent. Firm, still chewy but not aggressively so. Deep, round, smooth, still with a huge depth of fruit. Classic oaky Rioja – firm and the oak is fully integrated. A big, sophisticated wine that still has a long life ahead. A touch of mocha on the finish. Still pretty chewy as it builds. (JH)

This is a big and powerful red with dark-berry, tobacco and chocolate character. Cedar, too. Full-bodied, layered and intense. It goes on for minutes. Dries a little on the finish. Drink or hold.
