Tasting notes
A brighter, more youthful colour. Much more pronounced on the nose – dark and red stoned fruit with rose and blossom. On the palate there is a little more weight and power than those on the line up so far. The fruit is juicy and rich with a distinct minerality and there is menthol, tar, leather and sweet spice all converging in this open and generous Sarmassa.

Good medium red. Complex, ripe nose combines strawberry and dried herbs. Sweet, pliant and fairly deep, with integrated acidity framing the red fruit and floral flavors. An elegant, nicely balanced midweight with very good cut and length. (Unfortunately, my sample of the 2007 Cannubi showed a dusty oak component and I was unable to taste another bottle.)
Judging by the bouquet alone, the 2007 Barolo Sarmassa is a big wine. Layers of dark, vibrant fruit blossom on the palate and this fat, juicy Barolo opens up in the glass. Red berries, flowers, minerals, menthol, anise and new leather add complexity on the warm, open finish. The Sarmassa is quite a bit more powerful and structured than the preceding wines in this lineup, and will require additional patience for the tannins to melt away. It is a fabulous wine from Brezza.

Anticipated maturity: 2015-2027. Proprietor Enzo Brezza’s Baroli are absolutely beautiful in 2007. The wines find a striking middle ground in the way they express the opulent radiance of the vintage as well as a house style that favors traditional vinification and aging. Importer: A.I.
