Score 93+/100 · Drink 2016-2029, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Aug 2014

Brezza's 1999 Barolo Bricco Sarmassa has more depth, density, power and richness than the Sarmassa. A big, broad shouldered wine, the 1999 Bricco Sarmassa still hasn’t developed its full breadth of tertiary aromas and flavors. Today, it remains a big, full-bodied wine with plenty of life ahead of it. Hints of cinnamon, spice, cloves and licorice waft from the glass on the sweet, perfumed finish. The Bricco Sarmassa is less developed aromatically than the Sarmassa, but it is quite promising for the future. There is a lot to look forward to here.

The 1999 Barolo Bricco Sarmassa is dark ruby in color, ample in aroma with a nice complexity from the notes of mint, basil and cinnamon, and a solid, meaty palate, significantly fuller on the finish than its counterpart from the 2000 vintage. It should be good for another decade. Importer: Admiralty Beverage Co., Portland, OR; tel. (503) 289-9600
