The 2012 Bonnes Mares presents an intriguing push and pull between some of the more delicate notes that appear initially and its underlying, restrained power. This is another wine where so much is implied rather than overt. As always, the Mugnier Bonnes Mares is above all else a wine of restraint, although in this vintage, there is plenty of depth as well.

Medium red. Deep, very ripe aromas of raspberry, redcurrant, licorice, leather, mocha and earth. Then broad but quite dry and backward in the mouth, in spite of an almost chocolatey ripeness to its flavors of red fruits, peppery spices, herbs and underbrush. Finishes ripely tannic and very long; thicker than the 2013 edition but not brighter.

Bright, deep red. Very sexy nose melds blackberry, blueberry, exotic flowers, musky coffee, spices and herbs; an essence of this grand cru. The middle palate shows intense spice and saline energy, with soil-driven flavors of berries, fresh blood and spearmint spreading out to saturate the mouth. This deep, saline Bonnes-Mares really vibrates on the very long aftertaste.

The 2012 Bonnes-Mares is quite subdued and understated. There is good depth and nuance in the glass, but at the same time, I am quite certain the 2012 is only showing the barest hint of its true potential. Mugnier's Bonnes-Mares is never as extroverted as so many other versions, but here it is remarkably quiet and not fully expressive.
