Score 94/100 · Drink 2018-2030, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, Feb 2018

This vintage marks a stylistic shift in this retrospective. The 2009 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova proudly demonstrates a level of energetic brightness and crispness that you taste with unquestioned intensity here. This quality is buried in most of the previous editions of Tenuta Nuova. This vintage in particular exhibits ripe fruit with blackberry, prune and plum. But the mouthfeel is anything but heavy or flat. Instead, it shows buoyancy and verve.

A dark, inky wine, the 2009 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova wraps around the palate with the essence of blackberry jam, grilled herbs, smoke and melted road tar. All the elements meld together in a racy, voluptuous Brunello. There is plenty of intensity in the glass, but at the same time distinct elements of sweetness and alcohol prove to be distracting. Tenuta Nuova emerges from vineyards on the southern side of Montalcino, where the hot vintage appears to have been especially difficult in some spots.
