Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St. Jacques from Domaine Armand Rousseau has an intriguing bouquet, quite complex with subtle tertiary scents infiltrating the brambly red berry fruit. This is well defined, a little laconic at first but it grows in confidence, becomes less tight-lipped. The palate is medium-bodied with edgy tannin, a little disjointed at the moment and the oak needs time to assimilate. At the moment, the nose deserves a better palate, yet it will surely coalesce into a superior wine than it is at present.

(this was the last fruit harvested in 2012): Muskier and wilder on the nose than the village wine, showing a much darker fruit character. Juicy, sweet and wild on the palate, with a slightly meaty nuance to the black raspberry flavor. Finishes sweet and long, with dusty, fine-grained tannins. Doesn't show the eclat of the village wine today but this is richer.

The last to be picked because it's the coolest site. Hint of mushrooms and definite acidity and freshness overlaying that casual easy fruit. A little chewy on the end with fine tannins. A quarter of wine from the Ch de Gevrey in this. (JR)
