The 2011 Luce (Sangiovese and Merlot) opens to an impenetrable purple-black color. This wine is almost too much of a good thing. The bouquet is syrupy and super dense with tarry aromas of pressed blackberry and dried plum followed by smoke, moist chewing tobacco and teriyaki. There's even a spot of black truffle or Pecorino cheese. The finish is chewy and rich. This was a hot vintage and it shows.

The 2011 Luce is a big, big wine. Masses of intense dark fruit open up in a decidedly powerful and tannic Luce. The combination of the heavily extracted style and the hot vintage gives the 2011 massive, dry tannins that will probably never fully soften. There is no shortage of power or structure here, that is for sure.
