Score 95+/100 · Drink 2028-2045, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Mar 2015

(just one new barrel made): Bright, dark red. Reticent, oak-influenced aromas of very ripe red fruits and brown spices, plus torrefaction notes of coffee and mocha. Rich and backward in the mouth, showing terrific spicy intensity but not the mineral pungency of the young 2013 edition. Less bright and showy today than the Amoureuses but this brooding Musigny will need extended bottle aging to reveal its inherent complexity and soil character. Very long on the aftertaste, showing a strong menthol component and late-emerging smoky minerality.

(just a single new barrel of this juice; vinified with 60% whole clusters): Deep red. Mocha and smoky minerality dominate the nose, with the wine's treble perfume currently blocked by oak. Dense, thick and mouthfilling, offering extraordinary velour-like texture to its soil and gunflint tones. A hugely deep wine with explosive persistence. In one way, this is more obvious today than the more imploded, reserved Amoureuses, but in the other it is still youthfully inscrutable. But its palate-saturating density is extraordinary.
