The 2012 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is one of Frederic Magnien's deepest colored 2012s. It has a linear, conservative but delineated bouquet with mulberry, dark cherries, a touch of sous-bois and violets. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, nicely judged acidity and plenty of substance on the finish. A little primal at the moment, give this three or four years in bottle.

Medium red. Alluring perfume of raspberry, rose petal and high-toned cardamom spice. Broad, rich, dense and fine-grained yet somehow weightless, displaying powerful mineral support to its red berry and exotic spice flavors. The bracing, resounding finish features pronounced soil-driven salinity and a hint of youthful bitterness. (ST)

This is notably spicier and more aromatically complex as well with its beautifully nuanced aromas of red and dark berry fruit liqueur scents that have background notes of exotic tea and sandalwood. There is a beguiling richness and fine size, weight and punch to the medium weight plus flavors that brim with palate coating dry extract that buffers the firm tannic spine on the moderately austere and lingering finish. This is not a big wine by the standards of the appellation but I like the balance and overall sense of harmony. Tasted: Jan 15, 2014. Drink: 2024+
