Score 89/100 · Drink 2016-2028, William Kelley, Wine Advocate, Dec 2023

A more than honorable performance in a vintage best forgotten, the 2013 Montrose reveals aromas of dark berries and cedary new oak, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich palate framed by firm, powdery tannins. I suspect it will be at its best over the coming six or seven years, making it an atypically short-lived wine by this estate's standards.

The 2013 Montrose has attractive freshness and vitality on the nose: blackberry, cedar and light graphite scents. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and fine acidity. It's not complex but conveys joie-de-vivre . Just a bit blunt on the finish, but overall, probably the pick from Saint-Estèphe this vintage. Tasted at Bordeaux Index's 10-Year On tasting.

Much less tannic, more fluid and relaxed than the Cos 2013. A good advertisement for the Bouygues regime’s strictly sustainable practices ? Lots of personality and interest here and no sign of underripe tannins. Very different from Cos and arguably more in tune with the 21st-century vibe. (JR)

68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot. Harvested 26 Sept to 16 Oct. Hervé Berland takes over as general manager. Garnet hue but limpid at the rim. Aromatically open and appetising with briary fruit, lanolin and leather notes. Generous fruit on the palate but slightly drying and short on the finish. Good for the vintage but for drinking in the short term. (JL)
