Dark colour. From two different vineyards. Clean and lifted nose of typical Barolo fruit. Excellent poise. And clean and impeccably pure in the mouth with some broody fruit underneath the polish. This is all here, all in the right place and very, very good.

Ferruccio Grimaldi’s 2010 Barolo opens to a dark, slightly veiled appearance with thick streak of garnet and dark ruby in its muted color. The wine shows simple lines and slightly muddled aromas of dark cherry, tobacco and cola. What the wine lacks in definition, it makes up for in intensity and power. A note of sour cherry appears on the close. Drink: 2015-2022. Importer: Banville Wine Merchants, www.banvillewine.com

Terlo, Ravera. Mid-concentrated maturing ruby. Leafy cherry fruit. There is richness too on the nose. Pretty solid cherry fruit framed by proper tannins. Hints of cherry and marzipan. Big tannic finish, and very long. Just a little dry for the moment. (WS)

Ferruccio Grimaldi's 2010 Barolo is an excellent introduction to the vintage. Dark red cherry, plum, cinnamon and new leather notes emerge from the glass in a distinctive, medium-bodied Barolo. The 2010 stands out for its energy, balance and poise. Freshly cut flowers and tobacco linger on the finish. The 2010 is showing beautifully at this stage, especially if given a little aeration. Dried flowers and spices linger on the lifted finish. I very much like the sense of energy and intensity here. Grimaldi's Barolo is made from plots in Ravera and Terlo, and aged in a combination of cask and smaller French oak barrels.
