(Saouma has three barrels, from three sources and three altitudes within the cru): Medium red. Musky aromas of warm brown spices, game and earth. Sweet, saline and soil-driven, with a distinctly musky quality to the redcurrant and animal flavors. Finishes with fine-grained, building tannins and noteworthy finesse. Like the Malconsorts, this is more about earth tones than primary fruit; perhaps a bit less deep than that wine but sweeter in the early going.

The 2012 Clos de Vougeot is superb and sensual, its contours softened by the rich, naturally low-yielding vintage, which gives a level of pliancy and suppleness that is highly unusual for this wine. Sweet red berries, crushed rocks and high-toned floral nuances meld together beautifully. The expressive, layered finish is simply striking. Proprietor Mounir Saouma blends three barrels from different sources within the Clos for this wine.
In much the same vein as the Clos de la Roche I would describe this as relatively elegant as well with its exceptionally pretty and lightly spiced nose of various red berry fruit aromas that enjoy added breadth from the presence of floral, spice and earth scents. There is enough wood influence to notice on the comparatively supple and rounded medium-bodied flavors that tighten up quickly on the firm, balanced, complex and attractively textured finish.
