Score 89/100 · Drink 2025-2036, Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux, Sep 2024

Grilled smoky campfire notes on the opening of this full-bodied wine. Even at 15 years old, the oak is dominating the luscious black fruits, with sandalwood, tar, coffee bean and smoked earth all getting a look in alongside the fruit. This should integrate further, but it underlines the reservations that I often have about Destieux during En Primeur. Great clay-limestone terroir, great location, built for long ageing and for those who look for concentration. 100% new oak.

One of the finest wines ever made by proprietor Christian Dauriac, this big, chunky, fleshy, corpulent St.-Emilion is bursting with blueberry, blackberry and raspberry fruit interwoven with smoky charcoal and barbecue notes. It is full-bodied and unctuously textured, with plenty of weight as well as very impressive concentration and extract. There is no shortage of glycerin (alcohol) and tannin in this powerful St.-Emilion that should evolve for up to two decades.
