Score 89/100 · Drink 2023-2030, Neal Martin, Mar 2023

The 1990 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a clean and precise, surprisingly flinty nose, given the warmth of that summer, with white tea and pressed white flowers. The palate has a sour note on the entry, moderate depth and is waxy in texture, but it fades on the finish. Drink this in the near future. Tasted at the La Paulée in Beaune.

This is a true Bâtard in every sense as there is serious size, weight, concentration and intensity but with more minerality than usual. Still quite tight and only revealing a small portion of its true potential and this should require at least 7 or 8 years to arrive at its peak and should hold there for another 7 or 8 years if well stored. A terrific effort and if this adds additional depth and complexity on the finish, my score will seem conservative. A first class wine and worthy of its grand cru status.Big minerally nose, still quite tight but ex potential, 17.5-18
