The 1976 Palmer shows a little more bricking on the rim than the 1971. Balsamic tincture and melted red fruit notes appear on the nose. It's moderate in terms of intensity, with a light furniture polish and mushroom scents emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannins. Not a complex Palmer, yet balanced, though it tapers towards the finish. There are vestiges of freshness, yet it misses the substance due to dilution, especially compared to the 1971. A deliciously supple, fruity, plump 1976 with a smooth, soft nature and little tannins, this Palmer is fully mature and has adequate fruit. It is unlike many frail, somewhat diluted wines of this vintage. Anticipated maturity: Now-may be in decline. Last tasted, 8/84.
