Tasting notes
Valdicava's 1998 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano is a lean, somewhat austere wine of modest structure. Pretty notes of sweet herbs, spices dark fruit and tobacco emerge from the glass, but ultimately the wine comes across as best suited for nearer-term drinking.

Originally released in 2004, the Valdicava 1998 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano reflects the era’s preference for extra fruit weight and extraction, a style that has mostly held together over time. The wine now shows emerging tertiary notes of smoke, dark cola and savory spice layered over plummy dark fruit and dried plum, with fully resolved tannins that deliver a glossy, silky texture only achieved through extended cellar aging. With a moderate 13.5% alcohol, the wine remains coherent and expressive.
