Quite dark and purplish. Quite arresting deth of colour. A little development at the rim. More obviously ‘roasted’ and overripe than the others. Quite substantial and not nearly fully developed but is this a case of arrested development? There’s a bit of a hole on the mid palate. I think they may have tried too hard with this wine. (JR)

A very good value from Cotes de Blaye, this 50-acre vineyard, planted with 70% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 15% Cabernet Franc, produces wines that are meant to be consumed during their first 2-3 years of life. The soft, charming, berry-scented and flavored 1998 is uncomplicated, but savory and delicious. It is a well-made wine for its class.
