Score 82/100 · Drink 1988-1994, Robert Parker, Jan 1998

The 1978 is very similar to the 1979 in that it is round, fruity, and straightforward in style, with soft, spicy black currant flavors of moderate intensity. Ready to drink now, it should continue to drink well for another 5-6 years. A good, but not particularly noteworthy effort from Lynch-Bages. Anticipated maturity: Now. Last tasted, 1/88.

A peppery, herbaceous nose is more reminiscent of a straightforward Cote de Rhone than a classic Pauillac. Soft, straightforward flavors, medium body, and weedy fruit in the lightly tannic finish make for an indifferent wine. It is no secret that Lynch-Bages was off form between 1971 and 1980. The 1978 is one of a number of uninspiring efforts. Last tasted, 6/93. Wine Advocate.August, 1993
