Score 17.5/20 · Drink 1987-2020, Jancis Robinson MW, Jul 2015

The famously backward 1957 vintage, opened by Jean-Michel Cazes in honour of the birth year of the Clerk of the Royal Cellars Simon Berry. The nose was sweet and delightfully minerally. On the palate there was still remarkably high acidity but on the finish it was vanquished by a rich, round finish. (JR)

This is a superlative wine. Such consistent brilliance was not again evident until the succession of super performances that began in 1982.
