The 2010 Pommard Grand Clos des Epenots 1er Cru has a detailed, mineral-driven bouquet with cranberry, strawberry, sage and oregano that develops more intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied, finely balanced with a grippy and quite dense finish. This is a true Pommard, a little austere but with such freshness and tension. I can envisage this meliorating over the next decade.

Dark ruby. Light minerally nose. Rather dry finish – thick-skinned grapes or over-enthusiastic extraction? Or just middle-aged Pommard, more like! Wait for this grainy wine to soften. Impressive length. (JR)
Good bright full red. Deep, nuanced aromas of red berries, spices and underbrush. Rich, vinous and deep, with sweet redcurrant fruit lifted by peppery spices. Shows terrific vivacity and precision in spite of its modest acidity (the pH here is 3.7, according to winemaker Yves Confuron), no doubt due to the whole-cluster fermentation. This generous, sensual wine finishes with fine but seriously gripping tannins.
Intense and jewelly – a very distinct style that may not appeal to purists. Definitely sweeter than most. But there has clearly been work on the tannins. (JR)
