Score 91/100 · Drink 2024-2038, Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux, Sep 2024

Alexandra and Nicolas Robin arrived at Rol Valentin in 2009, buying from former footballer Éric Prissette and ushering in a new era, but until that point the wine had still very much been taking its cues from the garagiste era of St Emilion. Even knowing this, it has held up well, attractive ruby red in colour, supple texture to the tannins and enjoyable raspberry puree fruits along with sage and white pepper. There are smoked butterscotch and vanilla bean notes alongside, and it is now soft on the finish, definitely in the drinking window.

Tasted blind. Chocolatey crimson colour. Some (quite attractive) leafiness on the nose. A bit tough on the end but refreshing. Not too obviously right bank, though there’s a little heat on the end. (JR)

Round and juicy. Some real fruit-juice character. A bit simple. But not exaggerated. (JR)
