Mid crimson with a clear rim. Aromatic, jewelly, and better than some of the 1983s. Some vigour, but no great integrity or length. Slightly leathery and a bit simple. (JR)

Smudgy crimson. Lots of spirit on the nose. Very sweet start and a slight lack of lift. Very tough tannins on the finish. Out of balance. Too tough on the finish. Not enough in the middle. Tough much more agreeable fruit quality than the wine below (88). (JR)
This house makes rather restrained yet rich, flavorful vintage port and a very good tawny called Nimrod. Their vintage ports seem slow to develop, and while they never quite have the voluptuous richness of a Dow, Graham, or Fonseca, they have a unique mineral-scented character that gives them their own complexity and style. The 1983 is richly perfumed and fragrant, which is so typical of the ports from this vintage, and is seemingly more forward than normal.
