Score 88/100 · Drink 2002-2008, Pierre Rovani, Dec 2002
Flowers and spicy smoke scents (botrytis?) can be discerned in the nose of the 2001 Riesling Auslese Leiwener Laurentiuslay. Light to medium-bodied and detailed, this rich, oily-textured, sweet mineral-dominated wine is excellent yet lacks the focus, concentration, and depth of the vintage's finest Ausleses. Projected maturity: Now-2008. Importer: Terry Theise Estate Selections, imported by Michael Skurnik Wines, Inc., Syosset, NY; tel. (516) 677-9300

Peaches and something slightly metallic nose. Very, very sweet and with a slightly disconcerting note of canned rather than fresh peaches. Very slightly sickly but certainly impressive. (JR)
