The 1996 Barolo Riserva Monprivato Cà d'Morissio (magnum) makes for a fascinating pairing with the 1995. Dense and exotic in the glass, the 1996 needs several years to fully blossom. It offers a captivating mix of dark fruit, graphite, lavender, dark spice, sage and menthol. Mascarello’s 1996 Monprivato was one of the wines I drank often when I was first getting into Barolo. The Cà d'Morissio is that wine on steroids. Unforgettable.

At its best, Nebbiolo is capable of extraordinary purity and transparency. That is exactly what comes through in the 1996 Barolo Riserva Cà d'Morissio. A stunning, towering wine, the 1996 simply has it all. Lavender, rose petal, melted road tar, licorice and intense red-toned fruits are some of the many signatures. Firm, salivating tannins ensure the 1996 will drink well for many years to come. Although still very young, the 1996 is absolutely breathtaking today.

The 1996 Barolo Riserva Ca’ d’Morissio, with more classic aromas and flavors, is the perfect foil to the 1997. Boasting a dark ruby hue, it shows a captivating, well-delineated nose that suggests roses, violets and minerals, along with densely packed layers of primary black cherry fruit on a big, structured frame of notable length, with much purity and imposing tannins. Though not especially expressive today, my sense is that this wine is holding back much of its potential and it will be a fascinating effort to follow, although readers will have to be especially patient with this wine. Sadly, within just a few vintages it has become priced in the stratosphere. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2031. Importer: Doug Polaner, Polaner Selections, Mt. Kisco, NY; tel.
