Score 88-90/100 · Drink 2001-2008, Pierre Rovani, Aug 2001

The shy, black raspberry aromatics of the medium to dark ruby-colored 1999 Vosne-Romanee Les Chaumes lead to its expansive, medium-bodied personality. It displays loads of cherries, raspberries, strawberries, and hints of oak in its fresh, zesty personality. Its finish is somewhat firm, but the tannins appear ripe and sweet. Drink it over the next 6-7 years. Importer: Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant, Berkeley, CA; tel. (510) 524-1524.

Here the nose has clearly begun to develop secondary nuances though they do not yet dominate the exuberantly spicy earthy black fruit aromas that complement perfectly the rich, full and beautifully focused medium weight flavors that possess really lovely detail and the impressive sap completely buffers the still firm, if now softening, tannic spine. Indeed there is sufficient extract present that it confers a deceptive sense of accessibility though I would personally allow the '99 Chaumes another 3 to 5 years of cellar respite first.
