The 2011 Calon-Ségur has a light, tertiary bouquet, quite tight at first, hints of dried blood coming through with time, a little toasty in style. This gains complexity and is quite appealing. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, fine grain tannins, a keen line of acidity with one of the more refined finished in its peer group. This is well-crafted and certainly à point. Very fine. Tasted blind at the annual 10-Year-On tasting.

Leathery and savoury with astute oak spice. There's no greenness, but the black fruit is borderline underripe, very lean and bitter. Waspish. A few hints of smoke. Lacks lusciousness, but that might be a relief for traditionalists? (RH)
Tasted blind. Glowing garnet. Sweet, toasty notes on the nose. Much more evolved than most but approachable and friendly. Not grand but pleasing. (JR)

About the producer
Wedding gift lists traditionally include wine glasses or cutlery, but in 1718, Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur, the owner of Château Lafite and Château Latour and president of the Bordeaux parliament, received a rather more impressive present: Château Calon.
