Tasting notes
The 1959 Calon Ségur is a vintage I first encountered in 2018, but unlike that example, this was bottled at the property. It has impressive delineation, even sprightliness, with dark berry fruit aromas commingling with iris flower and loam. As it opens in the glass, tempting marine/estuarine scents unfold that lend further complexity. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and saline with lovely balance. The 1959 is firm and structured on the finish with a hickory note that lingers in the mouth. This is wonderful. Tasted blind at dinner at Lynch Bages.

About the producer

Wedding gift lists traditionally include wine glasses or cutlery, but in 1718, Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur, the owner of Château Lafite and Château Latour and president of the Bordeaux parliament, received a rather more impressive present: Château Calon.
