(100% bobal): Brilliant ruby-red. Intense black and blue fruit aromas are complicated by licorice, violet and smoky minerals. On the palate, vibrant, mineral-tinged blackberry and bitter cherry flavors gain sweetness and depth with air. Powerful but racy wine with excellent finishing clarity and sneaky, fine-grained tannins.

The 2011 Pino is another pure Bobal from Iniesta planted at 870 meters altitude and sees 11 months in used French 600-liter barrels. This is the most fruit-driven of Ponce’s wines in 2011, with clean pure boysenberry, dark plum and balsamic-tinged fruit that soars from the glass. The palate is very well-balanced with firm, slightly chewy tannins. There is superb minerality, but the finish is introverted and will need 12 to 18 months bottle age to open. This is a classy Bobal full of personality. Drink 2015-2020+ Readers will already be aware of my high regard for these wines, which offer exceptional value for money. Importer: T.
